The Scalar i6 is the most efficient tape library on the market in terms of management effort, floor space, power and cooling requirements. The updated iLayer management software ensures low library administration effort. It automates tasks such as report creation and distribution and can be easily customized using RESTful web services. With the highest rack density on the market - up to 12 PB in just a 19" rack (4.8 PB uncompressed) - the Scalar i6 requires minimal data center footprint. 80 PLUS certified power supplies reduce power and cooling requirements and thus the ongoing operating costs.
Minimal downtime
A comprehensive set of high availability functions ensures the operation and availability of the system. Redundant power and path failover (for robot control and data path) ensure the fault tolerance required for enterprise systems. In addition, the embedded intelligent iLayer software contributes to a higher level of availability. Sophisticated features such as environmental and power monitoring, proactive diagnostics, and media and drive cross-tab reporting identify trends and inform potential problems before disruption occurs. The proactive control of the library system that is possible in this way ensures maximum operational readiness.
Reliable data integrity and security
Intelligent Scalar i6 functions ensure that all long-term data is secure and readable at all times. EDLM (Extended Data Life Management) ensures the readability of all data stored on tape using rules-based integrity checks. In conjunction with intelligent data management applications - such as Quantum StorNext - the contents of suspicious tapes can be automatically migrated to a new tape. Custom rules control the process depending on the desired level of integrity. Active Vault enables automated library-internal archiving within the secured customer data center - at a fraction of the cost of other archiving solutions. EDLM can also run on the Active Vault partition, ensuring archived content is available when needed. Additional security features such as AES 256-bit encryption with library-controlled "set-and-forget" key management or media removal notifications ensure that your valuable content is protected from unauthorized access.
Effectively managed data growth
The Scalar i6's modular design can easily be expanded to include new storage slots and drives for increased capacity and performance. Each 6U module supports up to three full-height LTO tape drives and 100 storage slots for up to 1.5 PB of storage capacity per module. COD-based slot licensing (capacity-on-demand) enables gradual capacity expansions by 25 slots at a time. This pay-as-you-grow model provides more granular control over storage costs, with a capacity range from 750TB up to 12PB (based on LTO-7 compressed capacity). Customers can also save costs by using unlicensed slots for secure in-library archiving with the optional Active Vault feature.
